Oncologist-mammologist Danail Nazliev told whether it is necessary to remove a tumor in the breast. According to him, there are “myths” associated with oncology that need to be debunked.
In his Telegram channel, he wrote that some people think that if there is a tumor in the breast, then it is better not to remove it, and they hope that “everything will be fine.”
“This is a dangerous myth. If a tumor is found in the breast, it is better to remove it. If left alone, it can lead to serious problems. The tumor may grow to take up most of the breast or even spread to other parts of the body. Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to ensure that the tumor is removed and cannot cause harm,” the oncologist wrote.
A doctor can examine the tumor and discuss the best course of action for a particular situation, he said. Surgery may be required, but it is also possible to treat the tumor with drugs or other methods, the specialist added.
A neoplasm (tumor) of the mammary gland is a pathological growth of tissue, which consists of changed cells. Neoplasms are both benign and malignant. Up to 80% of all breast tumors are benign.
According to the expert, benign tumors grow slowly, pushing and squeezing the surrounding tissues and organs. Malignant ones infiltrate the surrounding tissues, growing into them, as well as adjacent nerves and vessels.
Among the frequent symptoms of breast cancer are: a knot or lump in the chest; retraction of the skin of the chest; nipple retraction; a change in the size, shape, or density of the breast; any discharge from the nipple; rash in the areola; breast skin changes pain in the mammary gland or nipple, swelling.
