Just as technology advances, education and the academic offer in Ecuador are also expanding more and more. Traditional careers such as law, medicine, among others, are taking new turns linked to digitization.
Pablo Beltrán, President of the Higher Education Council (CES)mentions that the new academic offer has been welcomed, for example, in teaching about data science and development software.
Fifteen universities in Ecuador are among the best in Latin America and the Caribbean: find out which ones they are
with this agrees Esteban Andrade, vice-rector of the SEK International University, who points out that the knowledge society is now. “Today students are different because they are technological natives. We move to a flexible model where the student is already an active part of the knowledge and uses the technology”, he mentions and exemplifies that the medical career has other components such as 3D printing, the use of digital tables to analyze patients. “Before it was rote in books,” says Andrade.
In the country there 244 higher education institutions. Among them, 62 are universities and polytechnic schools, 34 public and 28 private. Likewise, there are 182 operating institutes and conservatories, of which 121 are private and 61 public, according to data from the CES.
Homeschooling: this method of education has been adopted by several families in Ecuador, whose children report to colleges or schools in other countries, but there are two certified local institutions
This 2022, the CES approved 509 races; in 2021 there were 1,144 and in 2020 some 937. According to Beltrán, in each CES session between 10 and 20 races are usually approved.
Before, this process consisted of the CES reviewing each project of the degree, for example if the subjects were correct, if the professors were adequate and even if the budget was the corresponding one. Now, with the new academic regime regulations, the processes have been simplified.
Face-to-face, virtual or home education: Is there only one effective study method? experts opinion on the subject
“As of today they arethe universities that approve their own careers and give the CES the report specifying that all the requirements have been met and it has been approved by the collegiate body superior to the degree, it is uploaded to a platform together with the annexes, which includes the curriculum, teaching staff, type of studies, what is the title, admission profile, how many students are there, where it will be executed, periods and what we do is review the report”, explains Beltrán and adds that this procedure lasts a maximum of 45 days.
last ten races created by public and private universities and approved by the CES are linked to technology, transportation, sales and others. These are:
- Network Design and Maintenance (Vicente Rocafuerte Higher Technological Institute in Guayaquil). Face-to-face modality.
- Networks and telecommunications (Babahoyo Higher Technological Institute). Face-to-face modality.
- Integral stetic (Instituto Superior Tecnológico Oriente in the Joya de los Sachas). Face-to-face modality.
- Transportation Management (Instituto Superior Tecnológico Oriente in the Joya de los Sachas). Modality: blended.
- Management of Electrical Maintenance and Energy Efficiency (Rumiñahui Higher Technological Institute). Modality: hybrid.

- Inclusive education (National University of Education in Azogues). Modality: online.
- Corporate Communication and Public Relations (University of the Hemispheres in Quito). Face-to-face modality.
The universities also adjusted to the modalities and according to Beltrán there are six:
- In person: The student must pass 51% in contact with the teacher and 49% online.
- Online: 100% virtual.
- Distance: It works according to the pedagogical method of the institution.
- hybrid: when you group several modalities.
- Dual: The student must spend 50% in contact with the teacher and 50% learning in a company.
- Blended: The student has less contact with the teacher and is more online.
Andrade points out that education in general goes towards technology, including this tool in traditional careers, although he points out that The job market is not ready for everyone.
“At certain times we have felt that we are ahead of what the market perceives as something that is needed. For example, we launch a computer engineering with specialization in videogames. This industry is growing, however, in our country the importance of this segment is not understood. As a university it has been very difficult for us to position ourselves because there are parents who think that the students will spend playing. It is an unattractive product for many people. However, the reality is already penetrating that this offer has a sense of future”, argues Andrade.
Ecuador registered fewer layoffs, but also few contracts in November 2022: why did this happen?
According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), by 2025 they may disappear about 85 million jobs due to automation derived from technological advances. But, at the same time, it highlights that there 10 job skills that will be most in demand and therefore be learned in institutes. These are:
- Analytical thinking and innovation.
- Active learning and learning strategies.
- Resolution of complex problems.
- Critical thinking and analysis.
- Resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility.
- Creativity, originality and initiative.
- Leadership and social influence.
- Reasoning, problem solving and ideation.
- emotional intelligence.
- Technology design and programming.
“You have to be very analytical, critical in your thinking, know how to solve complex problems, be very creative, know how to use technology and the branch doesn’t matter,” advises Andrade. (YO)
