In January the hands of the Doomsday Clock are adjusted. How much longer until the apocalypse?

Little by little, the time that separates the world from its imminent end is getting shorter, as the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago warns through its symbolic tool: the Doomsday Clock.

This system, created in 1947, indicates in a countdown how much is left until its hands mark 12:00 midnight, that is, the last day on Earth.

According to Semana, the clock has been adjusted about 20 times since it was created by the scientists who developed the nuclear bomb and takes into account the effects of nuclear war, climate change, among others, for its measurement.

The irreparable damage that humans and society have caused on Earth have forced scientists to significantly advance the day of the Apocalypse and, since 2021, the clock predicts that there are only 100 seconds to 12:00.

The third week of January 2023, the hands are adjusted again and the fear of many is that the estimated time will decrease even more due to the war in Ukraine, a situation that was not taken into account for the analysis of 2022.

Although experts announced that the outlook is not so grim because the Doomsday Clock mechanism focuses more on analyzing the actions taken at the international level to face adversities, according to Huffpost.

“It cannot be read as an immediate risk measurement tool, because it comes from a long-term evaluation and not from a fixed photograph, from a cut in time,” explained Lola Bocanegra, a physicist specializing in the production of educational content.
