Ecuador exports more than 24 thousand kilos of recycled polyethylene to Bolivia

There were 27,225 kilos of plastic waste that were transformed into 24,750 kilos of recycled polyethylene, that is, in the form of pellets. This material left the country last Friday to Bolivia, whose purpose is to be converted into carry bags and T-shirt type.

Juan Carlos Luzuriaga, assistant manager of Recyclementions that the exported material is 100% post-consumer plastic that comes from the street.

“Without a doubt it is very pro-environment, since we are talking about millions of plastic bags, which went through a rigorous process under quality standards,” says Luzuriaga.

This export left Guayaquil by sea to Chile. Then, it will be transported, by land, to Bolivia. Expect to arrive on November 5.

Recycle is an Ecuadorian company that for three years has recycled 200 tons of post-consumer plastic. They turn waste back into raw material for other companies to create their products.

“This is a human effort that begins with the recyclers, who take this material to the collection centers where it is pre-classified. Then this plastic reaches the plant where it is washed, dried, labels are removed and melted in a specialized machine. Then it is filtered, given some color and added to improve its mechanical properties so that it is ready to be processed”, explains Luzuriaga.

The exported product was packaged in 25-kilo bags so that its client, in Bolivia, can mix it, add additives and finally turn it into T-shirt-type covers, thus substituting between 20% to 40% of virgin plastic.

In this transformation and export process, according to Recycle, Nearly 45 direct workers and more than 100 indirect workers including suppliers, classifiers, washers and others have participated.

In Ecuador, the current rate of collection of polyethylene or commonly used covers is very low, that is, 15%. At the same time are other products such as plastic bottles.

“As consumers we could contribute to improving this process if we dedicate some time to correctly separate the waste and not mix it all in a single garbage bag. In this way, people could have a better quality product, with more volume and in this way they could improve their income and lifestyle, undertake and grow. This would ultimately mean that more can be recycled and that there is a better disposal of plastics and that they do not end up in the streets or in the seas contaminating the environment”, emphasizes Luzuriaga.

The Ecuadorian company Recycle hopes to continue with these exports of polyethylene, a type of plastic with which t-shirt covers, drawers, market covers, among others, are made.

This is a material that can be recycled more than 100 times due to its structure and ease of processing, according to Luzuriaga. (YO)
