How and where the permission to leave the country for a minor is processed

The schools are preparing to finish their school year and with this several young people will complete secondary education. In several institutions it is traditional that activities are carried out outside the organization of the campus, such as graduation parties and school trips.

According to the economy of each group of parents, they can opt for a trip to a destination outside the country. In the same way, in the event that one of the parents decides to travel on vacation with their children, they must carry out an additional procedure.

The Children’s Code establishes that children residing in the country must have authorization from a parent in case of traveling alone with the other, while if the trip is not accompanied by their parents or guardians, that is, alone or with third parties , there they will need the authorization of both parents, as long as one of them is not deprived of parental authority.

“When they travel alone or in the company of third parties, the exit authorization must state the reason for the trip, the time they will remain outside the country and the precise place of their residence abroad,” the regulations indicate.

To allow the exit it is necessary to go to a notary with:

• Petition of a lawyer for the authorization of the minor’s exit.
• Identity card and voting certificate of parents, minor(s) and person traveling with them.
• Identity card of the minor.

While at the country’s exit points, Migration officials will request a valid minor’s passport or identity card if traveling within the region, the certified copy of the respective authorization granted by a judge or notary (it will detail who you are traveling with , length of stay, destination, among other data).

In the event that the departure is greater than six months, the departure of the minor will be reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its control.
