Turkey handed over Cold War-era cluster artillery munitions to Ukraine in November 2022, Foreign Police writes, citing sources among US and European officials. It is noted that Kyiv for a long time tried to obtain such ammunition from the United States, but was refused.
We are talking about advanced dual-purpose conventional ammunition (DPICM), produced in Turkey under an agreement with the United States, the publication clarifies. They are designed to destroy armored vehicles. At the same time, the United States, in accordance with the law, cannot export DPICM due to the “high level of marriage”.
According to the FP, Ankara “tried to cover up” the transfer of these munitions to Kyiv for several months. “After the US refused [Украине] in access to cluster munitions, Turkey was the only place they could get them. This shows that while Turkey is moving closer to Russia in some respects, it does provide significant military support to Ukraine,” said one of the agency’s interlocutors.
Turkey, like the United States, is not party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, an international treaty that prohibits their use, transfer, and stockpiling. At the same time, experts interviewed by the FT fear that the use of this type of weapon could exacerbate the problem of mine clearance in Ukraine in the future: cluster munitions scatter randomly when fired, and often do not explode, the publication points out.
Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that the total area of minefields created in the country during the hostilities reached 250 thousand square meters. km.
