Qualification of the baccalaureate degree certificate, one of the requirements to enter the Central University of Quito in the admission process 2023

The high school graduation certificate will have an important weight to enter the Central University of Quito in the 2023 admission process.

Starting this year, each higher education institution must apply its own admission mechanism, although the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) will still support the process.

The weight that the qualification of two decimal places of the degree certificate will have has not yet been defined.

In addition, other aspects will be included, such as socioeconomic condition, vulnerability and disabilities.

A percentage adjustment will be made if they come from public schools.

Fernando Sempértegui, rector of that university, explained that they will not take an entrance test, but the option is left open for the Senescyt to do so.

The next semester will start in April.

“It inaugurates a direct interaction between higher education and secondary education. We can, in this interaction, establish a mutual empowerment, above all so that the quality of the baccalaureate improves ”, he said.

Each semester there is an offer of about 5,600 places. Annually there are 11,200.

Its authorities have defined that some 600 places go to young people who graduate from schools in rural territories considered “excluded”, who do not reach higher education, from provinces such as Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Imbabura, Esmeraldas, Napo and Pastaza.

The remaining 5,000 places will be for high school graduates at the national level.

He added that young people enter a 16-week leveling process and not careers.

Each semester, 60,000 high school graduates apply to enter the Central University.

“This change in admission does not correct the supply deficit (…). A State policy of greater investment in public higher education is needed ”, he affirmed.

The annual budget is $144 million: $128 million from state allocation and the remaining $16 million from self-management.

Sempértegui mentioned that they have invested in technological careers with advanced laboratories; and, therefore, he stated that they expect high school graduates to opt for those careers. They would like to expand the academic offer in them, but more investment is required.

The rector estimated that, with an investment of an additional $100 million, public universities could increase 30% of the academic offer; and, if this is maintained for around four years, the deficit of some 40,000 young people who are left without studying each semester at the national level could be corrected.
