The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev, he was handed a note saying that the Russian Federation should reduce the number of employees of the embassy in Tallinn. It is reported by Interfax.
“The decision was made in order to achieve parity or equivalence in the number of posts in the embassy, which means that the number of posted posts in Russian and Estonian representations operating in the capitals will be equalized,” said Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu.
According to him, the number of employees of the Russian embassy should be reduced to eight diplomats and 15 seconded administrative, technical and service workers.
The embassy currently employs 21 diplomats and 23 seconded employees, Reinsalu said.
“Estonia considers the principle of equivalence to be very important in relations with Russia,” said Reinsalu. According to him, given that the Russian embassy staff “does not promote relations between Estonia and Russia” in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, “we see that the current size of the Russian representation is not justified.”
He noted that since the beginning of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Estonia has reduced bilateral relations with the Russian Federation to an absolute minimum.
