Cadet Joselyn S., who is detained for the Bernal case, could be released

The State Attorney General’s Office announced that it has ex officio requested the specialized judge for Violence against Women to set a date and time for a hearing to revoke the precautionary measures that were ordered for Police cadet Joselyn S. in the case of alleged femicide of María Belén Bernal.

She is one of the three people prosecuted and the only one arrested in that case.

Bernal went on September 11, 2022 to the Police School, which is located in the north of Quito, and his lifeless body was found days later on Casitagua hill.

In addition to Police Lieutenant Sebastián C. on whom there are substitute measures, such as filing every business day with the Prosecutor’s Office, placing an electronic surveillance device and prohibiting departure from the country.

The Prosecutor’s decision is due to the fact that new expert elements have been collected from María Belén Bernal’s cell phone, he said in a statement.

Joan Paul Egred, the cadet’s lawyer, indicated that there will be a hearing to hear the request to rescind the prison on the cadet.

For this Thursday, January 12, at 11:00 a.m., Cáceres is expected to expand her version from La Roca prison.

“This request responds to the principle of objectivity that guides institutional actions, whose investigations are always based on the elements of charge and discharge found, to guarantee due process and procedural truth,” argued the Prosecutor’s Office.
