A hybrid admission model for 2023 would be applied at Yachay Tech University

In February, the Yachay University, located in Urcuquí, Imbabura province, will define its admission process for 2023.

Since this year, public universities and polytechnic schools are in charge of defining their admission mechanisms, which was transferred by the Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) although that state entity can still provide support.

Of the 31 public universities and polytechnic schools, 21 are ready for their internal processes, with the exception of 10 that have requested support from Senescyt.

Andrés Rosales, rector of Yachay Tech University, explained that an agreement has been reached with Senescyt to apply an admission process that he called “hybrid”, but the details of this method are still being defined.

Rosales -he said- that they have not yet established what the admission will be like, since although there has been talk of defining an exam, this could be aptitudes, which refers to mathematical reasoning, and about the careers they offer, and not knowledge.

Andrea Montalvo, head of the Senescyt, has mentioned that universities will use other evaluation mechanisms, according to the field of knowledge, such as auditions to gain access to a music degree.

In two phases it would close the City of Knowledge project, which does not include Yachay Tech University

“Yachay Tech was conceived as a science, technology, and technology transfer university, so they are oriented above all to those three fields,” said Rosales, regarding its operation.

He explained that there are two semesters, and they aspire to include an international calendar to start in January 2024, end in June, continue in July and close in December, which -he added- would help students do their internships abroad.

There are 1,720 students, of which 1,232 are in careers, 465 in leveling, and 23 are studying postgraduate degrees.

There are 6 schools: Biological Sciences and Engineering, Physical Sciences and Nanotechnology, Earth Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Agricultural Sciences, which offer 9 undergraduate degrees and 8 master’s programs.

The Biomedicine career is the one that has the greatest student interest and then there are Physics, Nanotechnology, Mathematics, Earth Sciences.

What is the difference with other universities that could offer similar degrees?

Rosales responded that Yachay’s orientation is for students to pursue research master’s degrees or doctorates and to be scientists and provide solutions for the community at a technological level.

Of the 531 graduates, 119 are pursuing postgraduate degrees and 82 have international scholarships.

Most of the teaching staff have a Ph.D. degree and master’s degrees. There are about 180 teachers. The budget is about $11 million.

The rector considered that if that amount is doubled, they could improve their infrastructure.

For next February, the University of Guayaquil will enable a registration platform that can be accessed by applicants who previously complied with the National Registry, while the University of Cuenca is still working on what its admission process will be, and the Council of the Central University planned to approve the admission system this Tuesday.
