Videos show strong waves on the coast of Santa Elena

The strong waves forecast by the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) On the Ecuadorian coast, it is felt strongly this Tuesday, January 10, 2023, on the Malecón de Salinas, Santa Elena province, where videos on social networks captured the impact of huge waves.

Inocar reported in a statement that waves of up to 2.5 meters in height are expected, which seems to be the case in Salinas, where the tide rose to the public highway, flooding the sector of the boardwalk and the sidewalks of houses located in front of the sea.

The average threat level of the waves during this week is for 37 Ecuadorian beaches, according to the Risk Management Secretariat.

According to the agency, the greatest effects of this surge were expected for Monday, January 9, on the coasts of the Galapagos Islands; while as of this Tuesday the 10th the same would happen on the continental coast, “with a tendency to decrease in the following days.”

In a video that went viral on Twitter, you can see how large waves flood the place, in front of the curious residents who take photos and record the phenomenon at a very close distance.

In another of the videos you can see the Malecón filled with sand from the coast as a result of the strong waves that come from the northwest, and which, according to Inocar, will oscillate between 1.5 m and 2.5 m in height until Friday, January 13.

The Government of Santa Elena reported that the Captaincy of the Port of Salinas suspended sports and recreational nautical activities. (YO)
