The strongest emotional overstrain can trigger an epileptic focus of excitation in the brain. But, Tatyana Kazennykh, a psychiatrist, epileptologist, head of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Prevention of Paroxysmal Conditions, told Gazeta.ru, this is possible only if there is a predisposition.
According to the expert, stress is not capable of causing epilepsy, but it is quite a provoking factor with an existing predisposition.
“I have a patient who had her first epileptic seizure when a fire broke out in which her drunken parents were burned. She was pulled out of the fire, she looked in horror at all this, and she had the first extended convulsive attack with loss of consciousness, Kazennykh said. – That is, the strongest emotional overstrain launched an epileptic focus of excitation in the brain. But this would not have happened if she had not had an initial predisposition, increased convulsive readiness, realized in such an extreme situation, in a state of extreme stress.
