One of the main ways to protect yourself in severe frosts is to avoid going outside if possible, or at least try to move in “rushes”. Valery Vechorko, chief physician of the Moscow Clinical Hospital No. 15 named after Filatov, gave some advice on how to protect yourself from frostbite.

He recalled that frostbite can be caused, for example, by a long time without movement – for example, while waiting for transport at a bus stop, as well as tight shoes or the habit of walking without a hat.

First of all, the expert advises, you should keep your feet warm. Shoes should be loose, waterproof, with thick soles. In severe frosts, woolen socks should be worn.

Since fingers freeze the fastest, don’t forget to wear warm gloves or mittens.

You also need to cover your ears and face. In these areas, the skin is most sensitive to cold. The hat should be pulled over the forehead, and the face should be covered with a scarf so that only the eyes remain open.

Feeling that you are freezing, rub your hands together, knock your feet, move your toes, jump, make circular movements with your hands, the doctor said. If this does not help, try to get home or to any heated room as soon as possible.

If, nevertheless, frostbite could not be avoided, according to Valery Vechorko, it is necessary: carefully remove shoes and clothes; put on dry clothes; wrap yourself in a blanket; drink warm tea so that the body gradually warms up from the inside.

In case of severe frostbite, you must call an ambulance.

But the doctor strongly advises to forget about such a popular first aid in the cold as alcohol.

“Do not force the victim to drink alcohol. This is a common mistake. Also, do not massage a person, do not rub with snow or a woolen cloth, do not apply a heating pad, do not make warm compresses and warm baths, and, finally, do not lubricate the skin with oils or fats, ”says the doctor.

We add that among the main signs of frostbite are: whitening of the skin; numbness, lack of sensation; pain; movement restriction.

In these cases, you can not do without the help of a doctor – call an ambulance or go to the emergency room.

Earlier, we recall, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand said that frosts of up to 34-47 degrees are predicted in the regions of the European part of Russia in the coming days, and in some regions the temperature will drop to minus 48-53 degrees. According to him, such weather will be in more than half of the country in the coming days.
