Holiday for the Day of the Dead and Independence of Cuenca injects more than $ 70 million into the national economy, according to the Ministry of Tourism

The five-day national holiday for the commemoration of the Dead and Independence of Cuenca injected $ 70.1 million into the country’s economy, for tourism spending, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Tourism.

That figure, according to the Portfolio, was higher than that of the same holiday in 2020 (it had four days), the year in which the first case of coronavirus was reported in the country, in the context of the pandemic. Even, the ministry indicated, the income exceeded those that were in 2019 during the November holiday, one of the longest in Ecuador.

The beaches of Santa Elena, Manabí and Guayas, on the coast and southern towns such as Cuenca and Azogues were among the favorite destinations for visitors during the previous holiday that began on Saturday, October 30 and ended on Wednesday, November 3.

On a national scale, an average hotel occupancy of 43% was achieved, higher than the 28% reached in 2020, the Tourism portfolio indicated, adding that tourists made around 1.2 million trips during the holiday.

“This has been the best holiday since 2018. We strengthen the trend towards reactivation and recovery: domestic tourism is strengthening the recovery, and incoming tourism is also improving, as is employment,” explained Ana García Pando, Minister of Surrogate Tourism.

He also indicated that the trend of passenger arrivals by air so far in 2021 rose from 87,207 in the first quarter of the year to 175,337 for the third quarter, which represents a recovery in relation to the entry of tourists from abroad.

Finally, he mentioned that employment in the tourism sector has recovered over the course of the year, going from 438,706 in the first quarter of 2021 to 510,912 in the third quarter, in the accommodation and food service segments, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).
