The European Union seeks to expand cooperation with the states of Central Asia, including the construction of transport corridors bypassing Russia, EU diplomat Josep Borrell wrote in his official blog.

According to him, Russia and China “have played and continue to play” a leading role in Central Asia, but “it is clear that the region is seeking to diversify its relations and sees the EU as a suitable partner.” Borrell also noted that “relations between the countries of the region are improving” and the European Union is “obviously interested in taking advantage of these changes,” RBC reports.

The head of European diplomacy expressed the opinion that the EU needs to “use the huge potential” of Central Asia, which lies in “energy supplies, supplies of critical raw materials and new transport corridors that do not depend on Russia.” In particular, according to him, we are talking about the Trans-Caspian transport route, the development of which he had previously discussed in Kazakhstan.

Central Asia is a historical and geographical region of Eurasia in the west of Central Asia. The countries of the region include Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The last four are part of the CSTO military bloc, joint with Russia, Armenia and Belarus.
