Landslide on the San Lorenzo-Ibarra highway interrupts the return of national and foreign tourists to their destinations after the holiday

A large landslide was recorded this Monday, January 2, and restricted vehicular traffic on the San Lorenzo-Ibarra road, at km 109, at the height of El Limonal.

This was reported by Estéfano Villacís, undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) for Zone 1.

More than a hundred vehicles are stuck on both sides of the highway that connects the northern Sierra with the coastal area of Esmeraldas.

Carlos Viteri, president of the La Carolina Parish Council, indicated that these are tourists who traveled on December 31 to the pool complexes of Carchi and Imbabura and to the beaches of Esmeraldas to enjoy during the holiday.

Fernando Rea, director of the MTOP of Imbabura, pointed out that the rains detached a large mass of earth, stones and vegetation, which sealed the road over 30 meters long by 4 meters wide.

MTOP machinery is in the sector. The technicians and authorities are requesting dump trucks from the Municipality of Ibarra to expedite the work and face the emergency.

Rea advanced that they aspire to enable a lane from the afternoon to allow the passage of vehicles during the return plan for this day. “This highway connects with an important tourist area, for which we are working hard, confident that the rains will not interrupt the work,” added Villacís.

Carlos Viteri said that the temporary interruption in the vehicular passage generates some discomfort in tourists, public service carriers, producers who move fruits from the Sierra to the Coast and vice versa.

The group of travelers includes Colombian families who intend to enter the coast through this artery, taking advantage of the long Colombian holiday. (YO)
