Member of the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt, who headed the Belgian government in 1999-2008, called EU sanctions against Russia ineffective, RBC reports.

“Nine packages of sanctions, and the effect is less than zero,” he wrote on social networks, adding to his message a table of trade indicators between Russia and EU countries published by Politico. Verhofstadt suggested that the sanctions “only benefited Russia” because, according to the table, trade turnover with almost all European countries from February to August in 2022 increased compared to the same period the previous year.

Recall that after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the European Union introduced nine packages of sanctions against Russia. Some European politicians expressed dissatisfaction with the sanctions policy, noting that the negative effect of them is felt primarily in the EU. At the same time, the EU authorities argue that the effect of sanctions against Russia should become more noticeable in the medium and long term.
