A group of 53 foreign and national birdwatchers participated in the second Christmas bird count carried out in the La Segua wetland of the San Antonio parish, in Chone, from December 22 to 24.
The activity was organized by the Environmental Management Committee of the Chone Hydrographic System and had the support of Audubom (an international organization dedicated to nature conservation), whose delegates accompanied the process as observers.

The first day was the inauguration, two workshops on urban birds and bird watching on the Ecuadorian coast were given. In addition, a tour of recognition of the place was carried out.
During the second day, the participants were divided into eight groups to walk the trails and appreciate up close the natural charm of the birds found in the wetland.
On Saturday the tabulation of the information collected was carried out.
This activity annually brings together dozens of nature lovers who enjoy the charm of the Manabita wetland.
For the American Lisa Brunetti it was a wonderful experience. “Everything we have seen here is incredible, especially meeting the owl owl burrowing, which has been selected as the American Birding Association’s 2022 Flagship Bird of the Year and is located here. We also share with the inhabitants of the area about coexistence with the species”, she expressed.
The results of the count will be released in a couple of months, Brunetti said.

Luis Andrade, another of the observers, stressed that this activity is enriching. He traveled the La Sabana-Bachillero route for several hours, where he observed 97 species, including herons, owls, woodpeckers, and flycatchers.
“La Segua is one of the favorite places for birdwatchers, which is why I really wanted to be in the count. It has been very satisfactory, it is a unique place, it is the most significant wetland on the Ecuadorian coast. It is important that conservation activities are carried out in this natural paradise,” said Andrade. (YO)
