The Cotopaxi volcano registered more than 80 mild earthquakes in the last 24 hours, indicates the IG

The activity in the Cotopaxi volcano continued this Saturday with a moderate intensity and an upward trend, with more than 80 mild earthquakes and more than a dozen tremor episodes, according to the Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School.

As detailed by the entity, in the last 24 hours there have been 88 “long-term” earthquakes related to the movement of internal fluids, as well as 13 episodes of tremors due to gas exhalations, water vapor and a small amount of ash.

The puffs of gas and ash have formed a cloud that has risen about 300 meters above the summit and that due to the effect of the wind has headed to the east, the IG added in its report.

Likewise, a moderate thermal alert was registered and when the atmospheric conditions have allowed it, gas and ash exhalations have been observed.

On October 21, the IG reported an increase in seismic signals from the colossus that stands in the Andes, about 45 kilometers southeast of Quito.

Cotopaxi, 5,897 meters above sea level, is the second highest peak in Ecuador and together with Sangay and Reventador it is currently among the most active in the country. (YO)
