He is a wolf escaped from fairy tales, a small puppet with big eyes and yellow fur, named super wolf, surname Tremendous. He stopped chasing little pigs to be the superhero of a series of videos created by the architect Manabita Adolfo Cevallosaimed at training children from 6 to 12 years of age in culture, arts, sciences and values.
Now he is also one of the candidates for the MPrende awards, from the Ecuadorian company To Be Company. The most voted, too, at the time of this publication. If he wins with his project, Cevallos could start the production of new episodes, structured in eight modules: Values, Emotions, I love myself, My body, Creativity, Science, Environment and Culture.
When was Super Lobito born? He was created, says Cevallos, for his children, who are now 16, 12 and 9 years old. Everyone, at different stages, has heard the stories of the wolf, and currently the youngest is accompanying his father, suggesting situations and managing other regular puppets, such as El Niño and La Niña.
In the sketches, Cevallos tries to guide the impulsive Super Lobito, while he takes everything as a game and a joke, but he can’t help but learn something new in each short. For the contest, both have undertaken the Brilliant Youth mission, aimed at “the golden stage of virtues”, the school years. Thus, Cevallos is in the process of developing an application for mobile devices that will concentrate the short films of Super Lobito, but also comics, trivia and other challenges. By clearing the modules, they will have the opportunity to attend live sessions with the character.
The creator of ‘Super Lobito and the Bright Boys’
Adolfo Cevallos is an architect and specialist in project management. He explains that Super Lobito is the evolution of a voice character that he created for his first child, who liked puppet shows. It told stories like that of The three Little Pigs, with a ferocious wolf who was always wrong. “I started creating that voice, and that’s how I put him to sleep.”
By the time the second son arrived, the wolf had acquired the airs of a superhero (and a Manabite sense of humor). He lost the fierce and became tremendous. “He was a little wolf who helped others and took on some villains, but he also had super powerful friends.”
The third child began to grow by listening to the stories, and then came the coronavirus, the confinement. “By then we had already done some podcasts with the voice of Super Lobito, with the participation of my children and some of my family members, but the pandemic forced us to reinvent ourselves. You know that we all suffer something; I was left at zero in some labor aspects”.
Cevallos manages the ecological lodge Pacoche Lodge & Reserve, in Manta. “We had no movement for more than six months.” In Quito, where they were at the beginning of 2020, decided to take advantage of their talents and create an educational community, Keepers of Knowledge, providing classes in mathematics, literature, science and other subjects. Before this could get off the ground, Cevallos’s wife saw a need and had an idea.
“He told me that the children of the workers of the company she was in needed a distraction, being in confinement. “It would be nice to offer them something.” Then Super Lobito stopped being an imaginary character, with a voice, and took on form. Cevallos drew it, they contacted a puppet maker and commissioned several puppets, including the yellow character with the initials SLT on the chest.
Soon they had three virtual groups interacting with the character while he was playing, making mistakes, but ending up learning something new. “The kids were having so much fun and started asking for more. There are still people who write to me to ask for a greeting from Super Lobito to the son, the granddaughter, the grandson”. That motivated them to participate in the Mprende contest.
To Be Company, the organizer, is dedicated to coaching and to promote entrepreneurship, and as part of a course he invited students to participate, among them Cevallos, who applied himself to create a new video and logos. Voting is open until June 20. Up to five votes per user are allowed in that period. Then, a jury will filter the first ones selected by the public, and the finalists will have the option of refining their proposals for a final vote. The winner will receive capital to develop her proposal.
“We have a motto that came out of a workshop we did with my wife: ‘We are bearers of light and joy,’” says Cevallos. “So we try to use our talents to deliver things that can be fun and wholesome. I have Super Wolf, my sister and brother-in-law help me with graphic design, my wife is finishing writing a book on personal development, my mother-in-law published a book of poetry, and my 12-year-old son has just written the first part of an adventure book, and we are helping it with editing and publishing.”
The desire of Cevallos and his family is to form a cultural community, since they have not abandoned the idea of Guardians of Knowledge. “We set an example, bringing out all the talent and ideas we have, but other families can take advantage of that platform to unleash their creative potential”.
Super Lobito has entered a stage of structuring, prerecording and planning new content. “But I don’t think it will change much, we are going to maintain spontaneity and fun as well, but we are going to give it structure so that everything can be gathered in an application. You subscribe and you can go in and take the modules.”
The themes of the program, adds Cevallos, are universal: live happily, do the right thing. “These are very basic values, but they depend on the routine and day-to-day of the children, up to 12 years of age, which is where the Tremendous Super Wolf proposal is headed.” (F)
