The investigation against the soccer player Gabriel Crazy Cortez and ten others advance to the final stage of the judicial process.
On the night of this Tuesday the 27th, Mercedes Araujo, judge of the Esmeraldas Criminal Unit, called these suspects to trial as perpetrators for their alleged participation in the crime of organized crime.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the agent in charge of the case of the Specialized Investigation Unit against Transnational Organized Crime (Unidot) No. 4, Wilson Toainga, presented various elements of conviction such as monitoring reports and surveillance of the suspects. “In which the way in which the criminal organization operated would be evidenced,” he indicated.
Details of 200 intercepted communications were also exposed at the hearing, through which participation in crimes is presumed, and also the investigation report that is followed by this group related to the Los Tiguerones gang, which would be related to attacks, crimes , extortion, drug trafficking and other acts against their opponents.
In the judicial folios it is stated that Cortez’s defense, made up of Alfredo Arboleda and Dalo Bucaram, insisted on the request for dismissal for the player.
In turn, it was requested that the ban on leaving the country be lifted, however, the judge considered that the lifting of the measure was not appropriate.
In the pretrial hearing, the precautionary measures that weigh on the defendants were ratified. Six, including Cortez, remain with alternative measures and five with preventive detention.
The others called to trial were identified by the Prosecutor as Edwin R., Álex E., Luis M., Mayra R., José R., Ricky P., Ángel M., Emilio Q., Víctor R. and Christian Q.
On the other hand, on November 20, eight people already underwent an abbreviated procedure and received a sentence of 54 months in prison.
They are Bryan B., Javier O., Jaime C., María E., Juan José F., Víctor M., Jordy O. and Joer N. For Jackson P., the extinction of the criminal action was declared due to his death.
All of them were arrested during the Poseidon operation, executed in towns in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí and Guayas, on April 22.
According to article 369 of the Comprehensive Penal Code (COIP), the penalty for organized crime can carry up to ten years in prison.
