The cool winds of August They are ideal to raise our children’s spirits to the sky through the traditional kites, that simple and traditional toy that has been able to cheer up various generations of Guayaquil residents.
Kites have the power to bring families together, which is demonstrated in a joy-filled event that will unfold This Saturday, August 27, starting at 09:00, on the esplanade of Cerro El Muerto, organized by the Campo Alegre neighborhood of the El Morro parish, in alliance with the El Morro Parish GAD and with the support of the Municipality of Guayaquil through the Municipal Public Tourism Company.
The El Morro es turismo kite festival brings together children, youth, seniors and the community in general to dedicate a day to healthier fun. “El Morro parish invites all sectors of the population from Morena, Guayaquil and surroundings to be an active part of This event that seeks to promote the art, culture and traditions of the games of yesteryear, to keep them alive in the new generations.s”, says Kahyda Rivera, president of the Campo Alegre neighborhood.
Everyone is invited to actively participate in this festival that aims to encourage creativity in children and young people, promote the use of recycled material for the production of ecological kites and generate an environment-friendly family space for coexistence.
For this, this event includes a kite making workshop with recycled material, not plastic, or environmentally friendly material.
“We are aware that the best way to teach is by example, for this reason within the festival we will have a workshop to learn how to make traditional kites, and people from the community will be in charge of teaching children or adults how to fly them. thus creating an experience that they will remember for a lifetime”, explains Kahyda about this family gathering that also includes a business fair (pillows, bags, jars, jewelry, underwear, edible plants), gastronomic spaces (alfajores made from sweet banana, quince, traditional Morreño bread, suspiros, Morreño cheese), spinning top and hula-hooping exhibitions, and musical presentations.

The most exciting moment of the day will be the flight contest, which has five categories: children A (6 to 10 years old), children B (11 to 16 years old), young people (17 to 22 years old), adults (23 to 60 years) and older adults (60 years and older). In addition, the kite with the best interpretation of the theme ‘El Morro is tourism’ will be awarded.
The requirements to compete are an identity card (mandatory to categorize the participant) and bring the kite material to the contest. Minors must be accompanied by an adult relative.
Registration: They will take place the same day of the festival in the jury tent, from 08:30 to 10:00. The contest will start at 10:30.
Jury: It will be made up of three members who will qualify the materials used (recycled or reused material), greater flight space (height) and greater permanence of the kite in the air.
Awards: the winner of each category will receive a bicycle, according to the age of the winners, which also seeks to promote El Morro as a mountain biking destination. The winner of the best design contest will receive a basket with various materials for drawing and painting.
