A man was sentenced in Ambato to eight years in prison for illegal migrant smuggling

A court of Criminal Guarantees of Tungurahua sentenced William Geovani SU, alias ‘to eight years in prison.the tipper’, after being found guilty as the perpetrator of the crime of migrant smuggling, for a case that occurred in 2020, in which a migrant who paid to go to the United States has been missing since that year.

During the trial hearing, which was held in Ambato, the prosecutor in the case, Byron Viteri, narrated that in March 2020 the now accused offered Carlos Eduardo L. a trip to the United States for an amount of $15,000.

The man and his wife gave $4,000 to alias tipper. On January 14, Carlos Eduardo L. began the journey, arrived in Mexico by plane and then continued the journey by land. But in April the migrant’s family lost all contact with him. Since then the whereabouts of the victim have been unknown.

Among the evidence presented by the prosecutor against the perpetrator of the crime are reports of migratory movement, DNA expertise carried out with a sample of his mother’s fluids, which were compared with corpses in Mexico -which did not give positive results-, the expertise computing social media conversations and instant messaging.

Reports from the United States embassy verifying that the compatriot did not have a visa to enter the North American country were also included. In addition, there are telephone reports of communications with the sentenced, among other elements.

William Geovani SU was arrested on October 27, 2020 during searches carried out by the Police and Prosecutor’s Office. In these operations, three more people were also apprehended, who would be involved in three other cases related to the smuggling of migrants, the Prosecutor’s Office reported. (YO)
