The backup power line leading to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has been disconnected since December 29 due to damage caused by shelling, said Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
According to a publication on the IAEA website, the agency’s experts located at the nuclear power plant recorded a shutdown that occurred on the evening of December 29, “as a result of damage on the other side of the Dnieper, at some distance from the station itself.” At the same time, they reported that they heard the sounds of explosions that came from the side of the water channel that connects the Zaporozhye thermal station with the Dnieper. The degree of damage to the line has not yet been established, but work on its repair is already underway, experts said.
Grossi noted that this was the last functioning backup transmission line leading to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Currently, the plant, with all six reactors shut down, receives the electricity needed for reactor cooling and other nuclear safety functions from the only remaining 750 kV external transmission line out of four.
