Agriculture contributes 10% of the country’s annual GDP. For this reason, Cervecería Nacional boosts the economy of the sector with the Sowing by Contract initiative.
The agricultural sector is the fundamental base of the economy of our country. According to official figures, it represents around 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Ecuador and concentrates around 30% of the employment of the economically active population of Ecuador.
In addition, with their work, farmers also generate sources of employment in the rural sector, thereby helping to reduce poverty in the countryside. That is, agriculture generates a whole production chain that goes from the cultivation of the land, the sale of inputs, the logistics of distribution to the sale of food in each of the Ecuadorian homes. It should be noted that after the onset of the pandemic, the immense relevance of the agricultural sector for the entire country and the world became even more evident.
Boosting the agricultural production of Ecuador
For this reason, for more than 12 years, Cervecería Nacional has made efforts to find ways that allow small farmers to be suppliers of barley, rice and corn, offering them a livelihood for production and development. Thus, as of June 2020, the company, which is part of the international consortium of Anheuser-Busch InBev breweries, sought a strategy to support local producers through the Planting by Contract program that has the support of 11 provinces ( Guayas, Los Ríos, Bolívar, Carchi, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Imbabura, Pichincha, Tungurahua, Tulcán and Azuay) with a focus on the Central Sierra, a sector where about 30% of the country’s poverty is concentrated and their income is less than the $ 2. Its objective is to generate around 20,000 direct jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs in its area of influence.

Sowing by Contract is a program that was created with the premise of developing quality raw material in our country and using it in the production process of a new brand of beer, Nuestra Siembra. The initiative already has state support through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries.
With Sowing by Contract and Our Sowing, the commitment to continue working in the field is ratified, promoting initiatives through the use of technology, training and access to credit lines to strengthen the sector. Thus, all efforts will be maintained to make visible the work and effort of the country’s farmers.
