As part of the International Week of Design and Communication (Sidcom) carried out by the Communication and Multimedia Design careers of the Salesian Polytechnic University (UPS), between August 15 and 19, EL UNIVERSO newspaper received the award for journalistic management for sustainability.
The recognition was granted as part of the first edition of the UPS Green Generation Awards. Here, companies, the media and educational units that develop sustainable communication activities for the benefit of the community were highlighted.
Two Ecuadorians won regional award for environmental journalism
EL UNIVERSO offers in its printed edition a page for ecological issues on Wednesdays and Sundays. When the news warrants it, it is also done on other days of the week. And in EL UNIVERSO digital, reports and news about the environment are part of our priorities.
During the award ceremony, held at the UPS Centennial campus, the importance of establishing mechanisms to protect ecosystems was highlighted. In the midst of this, audiovisual products were shown that the students of the higher education center develop in this line.
The Sidcom began with a conference on the construction of dialogue and peace societies, by Nelsa Curbelo, activist and columnist for EL UNIVERSO. Then, on August 16, the master class “Journalistic research and writing” was presented, by Carolina Pimentel, editor of this newspaper.

While on August 17 the event “Eco-municar, critical analysis of the media” was held. Here, the results of a monitoring carried out by UPS students on the coverage of environmental news by various media outlets in Ecuador were presented.
In addition, several journalists were invited as panelists to analyze the importance of journalistic coverage of environmental issues. Isaac Delgado, from the channel RTS; Luis Antonio Ruiz, from Teleamazon Y WQ Radio; Blanca Moncada, daily Trade; and Ricardo Zambrano, journalist from Diario EL UNIVERSO.
“These events aim to learn through experiences, recognize good deeds and good projects in the eco-environmental communication part. It also seeks to reward college students”, indicated Marlene Mosquera, director of the Communication and Multimedia Design majors at UPS. (YO)
