Germany, seeking to abandon Russian energy resources, may become dependent on other countries, including Qatar, RT reports citing German media.
“Germany is looking for new partners around the world to get rid of dependence on Russian gas and oil,” the newspaper notes. “However, on all continents, energy resources are used as a means of exerting political pressure.”
According to the newspaper, the energy crisis has given new strength to the Gulf countries, including Qatar, which is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). For this reason, European politicians have traveled to the region many times this year to conclude contracts for the supply of resources.
According to the authors of the publication, the Europeans got from one difficult situation to another, perhaps even more difficult. This, in particular, manifested itself during the corruption scandal in the European Parliament (EP): several Qatari representatives are suspected of bribing MEPs to improve the image of their country on the eve of the World Cup. Against this background, information appeared about the possible suspension of Qatar’s access to the territory of the EP complex until the end of the proceedings. In response, Qatari representatives said that this step could negatively affect the relations of the Arab principality with the EU and have consequences for global energy security.
“Thus, the small emirate openly threatens Europe to turn off the gas valve,” RT notes.
At the same time, German companies have just signed contracts with Qatar, the publication draws attention. They provide for the supply of 2 million tons of LNG to Germany, which corresponds to about 3% of its annual energy needs.
“Therefore, one should be wary that the German government will think twice before making any statements or making decisions that could anger the sheikhs,” the newspaper notes.
