“This Government will never make the mistake of running over the Judiciary. We support all the good judges, which there are in Ecuador. However, those bad officials who hinder justice, instead of serving it, will be exposed. Those who obstruct justice, instead of upholding it, will be brought before the court of public opinion where they will have to answer.
Those were the words that President Guillermo Lasso said, on Thursday night, through a national channel.
“I declare that judge with the last name Oñate an enemy of public safety, a defender of criminals”
The president expressed his dissatisfaction with the rulings of judges that order the release of alleged criminals detained by the Police.
He referred to the case of Luis Alfredo A., alias Fat Louis, leader of the Los Lobos gang, who was arrested last week, along with four other people, for the crime of possession and carrying of weapons, but Judge Vicente Rubén Oña, at the request of the Prosecutor’s Office, issued precautionary measures that allowed his release.
By disposition of the magistrate, alias fat louis He is prohibited from leaving the country and had to appear on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. However, this Wednesday, December 14, the defendant did not attend and justified himself with a false medical certificate.
That day the Police recaptured Luis Alfredo A., in Quevedo, with seven kilos of drugs, rifles and pistols. The offender was arrested with other people.
Leader of Los Lobos, who received substitute measures, was recaptured with drugs and weapons
Regarding Judge Oña’s performance, President Lasso mentioned that he was expected to apply “exemplary punishment.” And he criticized that, apparently, the judge was unaware that fat louis He is the ringleader of Los Lobos, which has registered nine judicial processes and in February of this year he was apprehended with drugs.
“With all that background, the good judge just released the Fat Louis. Of course, apparently the Prosecutor’s Office did not request preventive detention, but the judge did not find a greater punishment than asking him to appear in court once a week, ”Lasso claimed and pointed out the defendant’s absence.
He stated that “the patience of the public is running out” and added that “judges are here to deliver justice, not to prevent it.”
The president assured that it is not an interference of powers. (YO)
