Police warn sectional candidates about alleged approaches by illegal groups

The National Police is investigating alleged links between illegal groups and candidates for sectional dignities.

Fausto Salinas, commander of the Police, indicated that intelligence data has determined that there are many illegal groups that try to approach candidates, and that, in some cases, they have had links.

He warned of the responsibility of the authorities who are seeking public office to know who the contributors to their proselytizing campaigns are.

“JR” and the 36 individuals who gave custody to the leader of Los Choneros would be prosecuted for trafficking in arms and explosives

“We have some reports in which people linked to illegal mining would try to approach candidates in territories where they can grant them exceptional permits that could facilitate these illegal operations,” said Salinas, in a conversation with the media.

He added that in some municipalities there would also be an intention to contribute and launder money through works or contracts.

For this reason, the official warned that the candidates do not allow people they do not know, who offer them money in a suspicious way, to be tempted.

If some evidence is found that leads to the commission of a crime, it will be handed over to the Prosecutor’s Office, he added.

In Esmeraldas, violent deaths decreased, but there is concern about a rebound in cantons such as Quinindé

Juan Zapata, Minister of the Interior, mentioned that they continue to collect the information, but that there is a highly advanced process.

He affirmed that they have the information and evidence, but accordingly, they will have to submit it to the consideration of the Attorney General’s Office to direct the investigations and to see the possible links.

Regarding the meeting that President Guillermo Lasso will hold with his counterpart Joe Biden in the United States, Zapata maintained that there is an absolutely firm commitment from both governments to confront drug trafficking and organized crime.

Regarding the announcement of a joint effort between Ecuador and Colombia, he expressed that they await official provisions.

He made a positive balance of the state of emergency that lasted 45 days and ended in the provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.

Of the 158, he indicated, 97% are in pretrial detention. He highlighted the police work, but asked that the justice system do its work, since he expressed that the Police cannot face organized crime alone, but that the judicial system must be the complement.

He was in favor of reforms in which if judges rule in favor of crime they are arrested, as he argued that many will think twice.

In reference to the emergency declared to the Police, through the Ministry of the Interior, Zapata indicated that the amount is $17 million with two functions: to reduce the vulnerability of the UPC in critical sectors and the acquisition of ammunition.
