An alleged thief died on the afternoon of this Thursday, December 8, in a police unit located in Guayacanes, in the north of Guayaquil.
The man, according to preliminary versions, would have been lynched by the citizens of the sector after being caught stealing a cell phone from a passerby.

According to the first reports, a driver hit him when he was trying to flee on a motorcycle and when he fell into the street he was beaten by the residents until the uniformed officers arrived.
The police in the area came to the point and managed to separate the enraged residents.
The alleged thief was taken to an office of the Motorized Operations Group (GOM) located on Antonio Parra Velasco avenue.
He had blows to the head, neck, chest, back and hands.
The police officers also raised the weapon that the subject had allegedly used to rob.

The now deceased was identified as Luis Chérrez Bourne, who records three records for robbery in 2018, 2020 and 2022. In 2014 he was arrested for attack and resistance.
The police officers mentioned that as protocol dictates, they called an ambulance and that a paramedic, after a check-up, indicated that the detainee was stable; however, an hour later Chérrez lost consciousness and died. (YO)
