Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has announced that Venezuela will fully open its border with Colombia on January 1, 2023. It is reported by RBC.
The Venezuelan authorities expect that from January 1, all types of transport will be able to cross the border. The countries announced the opening of the land border on September 26, but so far only pedestrians and goods vehicles can cross it.
The land border between the countries was closed to traffic in 2015 by decision of Caracas.
In February 2019, Venezuela severed diplomatic relations with Colombia. The authorities explained the decision by the fact that the territory of Colombia “is used for attacks on Venezuela.” Then, troops loyal to Maduro began to deploy on the border with Colombia against the backdrop of attempts by the opposition to deliver humanitarian aid to the country from Colombia and Brazil.
In March 2020, countries completely closed border crossings due to the pandemic.
In August 2022, the countries restored diplomatic relations. In September, traffic on the border resumed for trucks, and the new Colombian president, Petro, promised to “restore fraternal relations.”
