Pope Francis asks for support and psychological help for those suffering from depression

“Sadness, apathy, spiritual fatigue end up dominating the lives of people who are overwhelmed by the rhythm of current life,” he warned.

Pope Francis asked for support, in addition to the “essential psychological accompaniment”, for those who suffer depression or extreme mental or physical exhaustion, in the video-message on prayer intentions for the month of November, which was published today.

“Overload of work, work stress, cause many people to experience extreme exhaustion, mental, emotional, affective and physical exhaustion. Sadness, apathy, spiritual fatigue end up dominating the lives of people who are overwhelmed due to the rhythm of life today, “Francisco warned.

Given this, the pontiff urged “to be close to those who are exhausted, to those who are desperate, without hope, often simply listening in silence” because sometimes “there is no recipe.”

“And furthermore, let us not forget that, together with the essential psychological, useful and effective accompaniment, the words of Jesus also help them. It comes to my mind and heart:” Come to me, all of you who are fatigued and overloaded and I will give you rest, ”he added.

At the conclusion of his video, the Pope prays “so that people, who suffer from depression or extreme exhaustion, receive support from all and receive a light that opens them to life.”

Francisco himself revealed in a book published a few years ago and based on some conversations with the French sociologist Dominique Wolton that when he was 42 years old he attended sessions with a psychoanalyst for a few weeks to “clarify some things.”

The Pope Video is an official initiative with global reach that aims to disseminate the pontiff’s monthly prayer intentions and is developed by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network. (I)
