Serbia will ask NATO peacekeepers to allow it to deploy Serbian military and police in a partially recognized Kosovo in accordance with the provisions of the UN Security Council resolution. It is reported by Reuters with reference to the statement of the Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić.
Kommersant notes that Vučić’s statement came after a series of incidents between the Kosovo authorities and the Serbs.
Local media reported that hundreds of ethnic Serbs had erected barricades on a road in the north of partly recognized Kosovo, cutting off traffic through two major border crossings towards Serbia.
The Kosovo police at the Yarina checkpoint blocked the entrance from their side, and the forces of the EU and NATO special missions arrived at the barricades in Leposavich.
According to AFP, the demonstrators said they were outraged by the arrest of a former ethnic Serb police officer on suspicion of involvement in recent attacks on Kosovo police officers. The protesters wanted to prevent the transfer of the detainee to the capital Pristina.
Aleksandar Vucic assured that he would send a request for the deployment of the military to the KFOR commander, while expressing confidence that it would be rejected.
