Germany is not yet planning to completely abandon gas imports from the Russian Federation, so as not to “make life difficult for itself,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a conversation with fellow citizens in Essen, Germany.
According to RIA Novosti, Scholz stressed that the EU “did not impose sanctions on gas imports, primarily because of Western European countries, not primarily because of Germany,” because “others cannot find an alternative so quickly” .
At the same time, he added that Germany “made decisions in a timely manner”, including filling the German gas storage facilities, launching coal-fired power plants and building LNG terminals. According to him, now we can say that the FRG “will overcome this situation”, but “it will be more difficult to do if we refuse what, although in small quantities, but comes” from Russia. “We should not unnecessarily complicate our lives, this is my personal conviction,” Scholz added.
At the same time, he stressed that Germany must expand its infrastructure for gas imports in order to get rid of dependence. “It would be much easier if there was a pipeline that has been abandoned for many years – now I expect it to be – through France, possibly through Italy,” Scholz explained, adding that “if the countries of southern Europe find new sources of imports gas – from Africa, near Asia, from where they can get gas, without the participation of Russia, this will support both the world market and Germany.
