Witnesses indicated that the fire originated because one of the children lit a candle to do his homework and then forgot to put it out.
Wilson Uclides Quijije Cedeño (65 years old) and his wife, Gloria Cuzme (56 years old), lost all their belongings in a fire that occurred at 9:00 p.m. yesterday at the La Y de Chila site, in the parish of San Jacinto del Búa, in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.
The house was on two floors, built of wood and cane. A total of eight people lived there, including husbands. They said that in the lower part of the house there was a small room that was occupied by a son and grandson, Wilson said.
Witnesses indicated that a grandson who was doing schoolwork lit a candle. The young man went up to the house, but apparently he forgot to extinguish the candle, which after a few minutes would generate the fire in that house.
Four people were left homeless after a fire in El Carmen
“We were meeting watching movies, when suddenly we noticed that the flames were already beginning to gather strength under his room. I wanted to enter the room and the fire did not allow it, and what I did was go to the kitchen to remove the gas cylinders to prevent them from exploding. All the family members quickly got out of the house ”, he said.
Gloria Cuzme, Wilson’s wife, with her sad look expressed that the fire consumed three mattresses, beds, clothes, television, refrigerator, kitchen utensils. Even about 200 boards that he had under his house were also burned.
He noted that the fire spread so fast that there was no time to even call the Fire Department. (I)
