The Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation proposed to reduce budget allocations this year by more than 7 billion rubles. due to the impossibility to buy components for the transfer of authorities to smartphones with a Russian operating system and applications developed for it. This was reported by TASS with reference to the list of proposals by the main managers of federal budget funds to amend the consolidated budget schedule for 2022 and for the planning period of 2023 and 2024.
In May, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko claimed that specialists were improving the Aurora mobile operating system. Currently, about 450-500 thousand mobile devices work on the Aurora operating system.
Recall that back in January it became known that the Ministry of Digital Transformation had requested 19.4 billion rubles from the federal budget. for the development of the Russian mobile operating system (OS) “Aurora”. The money was supposed to be used to purchase Aurora tablets for doctors and teachers and to develop applications for it. Until 2024, it was planned to purchase about 700 thousand tablets. Andrei Chernenko, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development, told Kommersant about this.
The actual money will be received by two Russian IT companies: Aquarius and Bayterg. So far, they are the only ones producing Russian tablets at Aurora, a source in the government explained. Another interlocutor pointed out that government agencies do not want to independently, without a “pointer” from above, purchase gadgets at Aurora because of its “half-empty application store”. The OS needs new software that can be used by doctors or teachers.
Aurora was known as Sailfish until February 2019. It was originally developed by the Finnish company Jolla. A few years ago, Grigory Berezkin, the owner of the ESN and RBC group, acquired a controlling stake in this company. Later, Rostelecom became the main owner of the rights to the OS.
