The parliamentary faction of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which is part of the ruling coalition of Germany, has called for the dismantling of the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, TASS reports, citing the program document of the liberals adopted at a meeting in Bremen.
“As free democrats, we demand the dismantling of Nord Stream 2, as well as the speedy development of a concept regarding legal, technical and environmental guarantees,” the document says.
In addition, the FDP faction also called for a reduction in purchases of all energy carriers and raw materials from Russia and Belarus as soon as possible, as far as the economic situation in Germany would allow.
At the same time, the liberals assured Ukraine of further support, demanded to expand anti-Russian sanctions against members of the Russian leadership and advocated the expulsion from the EU of family members of persons on the sanctions list, as well as the deprivation of their visas.
As RIA Novosti recalls, Nord Stream, the main route for gas supplies from Russia to Europe, has been operating with restrictions since mid-June, and since the end of July, it has been operating at only 20% of its nearly 170 million cubic meters of throughput capacity per day. The Russian side has repeatedly emphasized that the limitation of deliveries is due solely to sanctions, which caused problems with the maintenance and repair of Siemens gas pumping units. Now the line is provided by only one turbine.
We also add that on August 23, Polish President Andrzej Duda also considered it necessary to dismantle the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. He called for this during the Crimean Platform forum in Kyiv.
“A change of policy in the West involves not only the suspension of Nord Stream 2, but also the liquidation, complete dismantling of the gas pipeline,” RBC quoted the Polish leader.
Prior to this, the Vice-Chancellor, German Economy Minister Robert Habek considered that the short-term gain from the launch of the “mothballed” Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 would be a diplomatic and political failure for Berlin. In his opinion, it is impossible to increase the dependence of Germany on Russian gas.
At the same time, the vice chancellor is convinced that Nord Stream 1 is now fully operational, and he called the information that gas can no longer be pumped through this pipeline as “Russian propaganda”.
Earlier, Wolfgang Buechner, Deputy Spokesman for the German government, made it clear during a briefing that the resumption of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project is not being discussed at the moment.
