According to the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School, Tuesday’s earthquake occurred at 05:24 local time (10.24 GMT) two kilometers deep and about 14 kilometers from the city of San Gabriel.
The Integrated Security Service (ECU 911) of the city of Tulcán, capital of the province of Carchi, reported that the collapse of a house in the Montúfar canton has been reported.
According to the National Risk and Emergency Management Service, the earthquake was felt moderately in Tulcán and with slight intensity in Ibarra, capital of the neighboring Andean province of Imbabura.
Due to the earthquakes on Tuesday, the aforementioned Secretariat reported eight injuries, 332 houses affected, 18 of them destroyed, 26 public assets affected, as well as 32 educational units and five health units.
The governor (government delegate) of the province of Carchi, Yaco Martínez, told Efe that Monday’s strong earthquake generated, in addition to damage, concern because the epicenter was located in the area of a volcanic complex.
The governor said that, for this reason, coordination has even been activated with the authorities in southern Colombia, especially in the towns of Chiles, La Calera and San Francisco.
The Colombian immigration authorities have also been alerted to the possibility that people from the sector could cross the border into Ecuador, because it would be easier for them in the event of an emergency situation.
In any case, Martínez said that contingency plans have been activated throughout the sector to attend to families affected both by the earthquake and in the event of a possible reactivation of Chiles-Cerro Negro. (YO)
