Retreading, savings and sustainability of your tires

Retreading, savings and sustainability of your tires

Retreading is defined as a renewal of the tire tread, which gives it a new period of life, it can present the same original design or any other design, depending on the need of the tire owner. This procedure is in line with everything related to sustainability and environmental care, because when a tire is reused, less oil is used in its production, less toxic gases are emitted into the environment and less energy is used than in the manufacture of a tire. new tire. That is, it generates significant savings around the use of raw materials, energy and final cost for the user.

Currently, there are several companies dedicated to the retreading of tires for heavy vehicles that are responsible for receiving the casings (used tires) and providing them with a new tread band, complying with strict controls, both national and international, achieving optimal levels of quality and security.

A mandatory technical process

Pablo Cárdenas, marketing manager of Durallantas, explains that it is a technical process that must be carried out practically mandatory, since not doing so means wasting a property for which it was built. “The transporter has to make a decision like when he buys the new tire. There are few retreaders that meet the law and quality standards. Going anywhere is not the same as going, for example, to Durallantas, which has been on the market for 42 years and meets all INEN and quality standards; When you go to a serious and recognized company, the final product will be very different, at the same time that the risks are eliminated. The retreading process is as technical as the process of manufacturing a new tire,” he emphasizes.

Advantages of using retread tires

They are several:

– Reduction of operating costs.

– It is aligned with sustainability and is less polluting than the production of new tires.

– It is false that they explode (retreading is integral), or that they cannot be balanced.

Although all heavy vehicle tires are suitable for retreading, specialists recommend that steered wheels not receive this treatment, but only the drive or other rear wheels.

“It is a technical process that, when carried out in specialized places, has a performance very similar to that of a new tire for heavy transport use. The recommendation is to retread for the traction and drag part. With good tire care, for example, under the correct controls of the fleet department of the Antonio Pino Ycaza company, specialized in this type of service, a Goodyear brand tire (casing) can be retreaded up to three times without no problem”, explains Erick Tamayo, commercial director of the company Antonio Pino Ycaza, a company that retreads tires for heavy vehicles.

When to retread

Depending on the use of the tire, experts recommend carrying out the technical retreading procedure when the millimeter of the remaining tread reaches 2 to millimeters: if the rim exceeds that level, they recommend that it be used up completely and not be retreaded.

The user must know that the manufacturer of new tires produces them in order to be retreaded. “All tires are made for it, that is, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Goodyear, the most prestigious factories ask to buy their tires and they are also the ones that will be able to retread the most times,” says Pablo Cárdenas.

“At Antonio Pino Ycaza, the technical process of retreading heavy vehicle tires can take between three and five days, depending on the results of the physical inspection and according to the quality standards defined by the process,” adds Erick Tamayo.

It should be noted that not all tires are suitable for retreading, some may be rejected for various reasons, including excessive wear, damage or punctures.
