By accepting the Peace Prize Vaclav Havel, (who died in 2011, former Czech president and anti-communist activist) stated that when as a student she read “1984” by George Orwell, “she did not believe that something similar could happen in Russia”, and however “she was wrong”. She also said that people are arrested for anti-war statements, independent media are exterminated, and “Putin is a war criminal who has built a cynical and false propaganda machine.” She also noticed that the Russian media are teaching Russians to hate Ukrainians, reported an independent Ukrainian.
Owsiannikowa promised that she would allocate part of the prize money to helping Ukrainians who were forced to flee the war. “I want to use the Vaclav Havel Prize for help” – these are the most important words that I spoke from the stage. It is impossible to look without tears at the women and children who currently live in tent camps. Dear Ukrainians, forgive us, if you can … “- wrote the journalist on Twitter.
Oatiannikowa received the Vaclaw Havel award. This was condemned by Ukrainian journalists
The award of Owsiannikowa was criticized by Ukrainian journalists and activists. They indicate that it has spread disinformation in line with the Kremlin’s line for eight years.
“The Freedom Forum in Oslo awarded the Havel 2022 prize to the Russian propagandist Marina Ovsiannikova. During her speech, she said that the Russian media has been persuading people to hate Ukraine for years. That’s true. And she was one of those responsible for it,” he wrote on Twitter. Ukrainian journalist Ostap Jarysz.
“To praise a Russian propagandist is equal to spitting on the graves of 30 journalists killed by Russia in the genocide in. It is an insult to the name of Havel, who falls in his grave,” said another journalist, Maxim Eristavi. “Oslo FF, you can f ** k in the same direction as a Russian warship,” he added.
Activist Daria Kaleniuk in turn wrote that she had been invited to speak at the Freedom Forum in Oslo, but when she learned that Marina Owsiannikova would receive the award, she refused to participate. “I informed the organizers that it was humiliating for Ukrainians that Russian propagandists who had fueled the war for years were rewarded,” the activist emphasized.
Anti-war protest on Russian TV. What did Marina Owsiannikova do?
On March 14, during the main issue of the propaganda news of the Pervy KanaĆ station, Marina Owsiannikowa stood behind the presenter with a poster that read “Not for war. Stop the war. Don’t believe the propaganda. They are cheating you. The Russians against the war.” She also released a video earlier in which she said she was ashamed of participating in this propaganda. Pictures from the program quickly circulated the media around the world, and the journalist herself was considered by many to be a symbol of resistance and courage. It is worth adding, however, that there are also some critical comments and voices indicating that its action was “an attempt by the secret services to divert attention from the crimes committed by the Russian army in Ukraine,” reports dw.com.
In April, Owsiannikowa was hired as a freelance correspondent for the German daily “Die Welt”. Ukrainians protested against this on April 14 in Berlin.
The Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security claims that Ovsiannikov is actively working in favor of Russia in its war of disinformation and psychology. They believe that it has gained recognition and credibility in the West and is now using it to promote a narrative among Western audiences about the “necessity” of lifting the sanctions.
