Ecopaís gasoline meets the same quality requirements as extra gasoline but with added value, it has a renewable component in its formula. It is made from a mixture of high and low octane gasoline with ethanol, in order to meet the quality requirements established by the INEN935 Standard, which regulates the quality of fuels.
The project began in 2010 with the Biofuels Plan and its complete implementation was carried out in 2014, beginning its commercialization on the coast, then it reached the entire country through different marketers. Its price in April 2021 was set at $1,650848.
“By using ethanol as part of its components, less harmful gases and less carbon dioxide (C02) are generated during combustion; that benefits our entire environment and, at the same time, the agribusiness sector, since the raw material for this fuel comes from sugar cane,” says Jessica Acosta, operations coordinator for Petróleos y Servicios, a marketer whose stations, only from January As of March 2021, more than 25 million gallons have been sold, marking a growth of more than 3% in the same period in 2020.
This preference on the part of users in relation to super gasoline would have several reasons, according to Xavier Granda León, fuel manager of the Terpel company. “One of a technical nature is the real need for vehicles, those that are more than fifteen years old and whose compression ratio is low, do not require high-octane fuel; however, the octane number of the extra/extra with ethanol is only 85 octane (RON), a product that meets the needs of a low range of vehicles, and the second and more relevant is the price, to the extent that the The gap between the two products widens, the greater the migration of clients”, he maintains.
At the same time, Granda asserts that at the national level in the gasoline market of the automotive sector, 91% of sales is extra/extra gasoline with ethanol (eco-country) and 9% is super gasoline.
Advantages of using ecocountry
Users and distributors agree that the main advantages are:
• Better price in relation to the supermarket.
• Better combustion.
• Lower emission of polluting gases.
• Recommended for low octane vehicles.
Ecopaís gasoline is marketed in the provinces of Guayas, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, Loja, Manabí, Esmeraldas, Cañar, Azuay, Bolívar, El Oro, Zamora Chinchipe and Morona Santiago. Last February, Petroecuador and the Ecuadorian Biofuels Association (Apale) signed a contract for the supply of 113,575,238 liters of ethanol, aimed at producing ecocountry gasoline.
The production of ethanol will be in charge of the companies Codana, Soderal and Producargo, with an investment of $96,477,364.20 over 480 days.
