Adriana Lucía, the Colombian artist who works against xenophobia together with Rigoberta Menchú

Personerías Panas contra la Xenophobia is the initiative that seeks to mitigate the rejection of the Venezuelan migrant population.

Colombian singer and songwriter Adriana Lucia, that for many years has vindicated the disadvantaged social sectors, stated in an interview with Efe that in the face of the massive Venezuelan migration to their country in recent years “we must understand that they and we are the same.”

“The one who divided Colombia and Venezuela did not know a bit about geographic politics, because Venezuelans and Colombians are the same,” said the artist.

Adriana Lucía, born 39 years ago in the Caribbean town of El Carito, joined the initiative Personerías Panas against Xenophobia which seeks to mitigate the rejection of the Venezuelan migrant population and favor their integration and socioeconomic inclusion in the country.

Next to her, whom He is known for his versatility to combine rhythms such as cumbia and porro with popRigoberta Menchú, the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner and Unesco Goodwill Ambassador, is involved.

Reciprocity

Referring to xenophobia in her country, the singer recalled that several decades ago “five million Colombians arrived in Venezuela and so far we have 1.8 million Venezuelans registered in the country, that is, less than half of the population that one day he went there. “

“For humanity, dignity and respect, the least we can do is promote that we are the same, that we are brothers and that we must open our arms to them and receive them ”, he said.

He recalled that many Venezuelans “have had to survive in many aspects, with a difficult situation, especially due to labor exploitation.”

Attitude towards migrants

The artist, who recently announced that she was pregnant with twins, highlighted the efforts to improve the living conditions of those who had to leave their country to seek new opportunities in Colombia, but he criticized those who are trying to engage in politics with the Venezuelan population.

“They go to Europe and say a lot of things in favor of Venezuelan migrants, they collect all the aid, but here in Colombia they say that they have to be removed because they are the ones who steal the most, the ones who rob, which are the worst. But when we go to the statistics, we see that this is not true, “he noted.

In his opinion, “just as there are people who rob and rob, there are people who build, who long for hope when they arrive in this country.”

“The least I can do as an artist and as a woman is to put myself in the place of the other and ask myself what I would do if I were in that situation,” she said, adding: “We artists think that we will never be there because we live in a bubble. and in another stratosphere, with people telling us that we are the best and that without us the world is ending, because it is very difficult to put oneself in the place of the other “.

When she recounted that she was recently in Bucaramanga in a refugee home for Venezuelan women and Colombian returnees, Adriana Lucía affirmed that “you have to understand that as a woman and as a mother, if one day my children cannot eat, I would go anywhere and do whatever is”.

“The first thing I must express is gratitude to these women for allowing me to enter their hearts. I am pregnant and to see those pregnant mothers or nursing babies fighting in those spaces every day, for me it is comforting,” he stressed.

Social activism

When asked about the social activism that she combines with her artistic activity, the performer of hits such as You arrived and I want you to stay He indicated that “Cities and towns survive at the point of art.”

“There is not a population in Colombia, and especially the most vulnerable, that does not have a dance group, some guys playing in a band, women with skirts, decimeros, pipers, “he said.

He added that “a country with emotions so broken, worn, so broken by so much violence, needs more from its artists.”

“If we go to the future and see what Colombian musicians were doing at this time, what are we going to see, what story are we going to tell. We are going through the most important process in recent times in the world, which is the peace process. I ask where are the musicians’ records? What did they sing about that? “, he said.

That is why he says that it is not about all the singers making “Mamerta (left) music” but that they have “social conscience”.

“People are the ones who make you and then how can you not give the voice to the people,” he concluded. (I)
