Probably each of us has come across the terms “Cold Zośka” and “cold gardeners” at least once, but not everyone knows what these terms mean. Today we will try to explain them, and we will also tell you when exactly they can be expected in 2022.

What do cold gardeners mean and why do they appear?

The two terms mentioned above mean which are characteristic of the central part of Europe. They can be easily seen in mid-May, after the baric boom period the atmospheric circulation changes, as a result of which cold air appears in a given area along with the lowlands from the polar regions.

What are the names of cold gardeners?

is the common name for those cold days. These terms come from the patrons of the May days. On May 12, St. Pancratius, May 13 – St. Serwacy, and on May 14 – St. Boniface. St. Zofia, in turn, falls on May 15. Why are they called cold? Because it is around these days that the above-mentioned change in atmospheric circulation occurs, which often brings frosts.

The Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University conducted research which showed that in the years 1881-1980, for 95 years of this period, there was a cooling down in mid-May. It has been calculated that the best chance of a significant cooling down is exactly between May 10 and 17.

How is this year’s “cold gardeners” period going to be? At present, the first frosts are already observed, and more are forecasted.
