This year they meet 500 years since Elkano’s first circumnavigation of the world. Coinciding with the anniversary, the Elkano Itsas Herria cultural project will tour the Basque coast from the end of May until September.
The Elkano Foundation, Albaola and the Basque Maritime Museum presented this Monday the details of the Elkano Itsas Herria project, a cultural journey inspired by the maritime history of the Basque people.
Elkano Itsas Herria will start in Pasaia Itsas Festibala (May 26-29) and will travel through some thirty Basque ports until reaching Ziburu-San Juan de Luz on September 18, where they are celebrated with the European Heritage Days. Before, for example, it will stop in Getaria on September 6, coinciding with the Elkano Landing.
In three months the Patache Juanita Larando It will cover the entire coast from port to port, visiting nearly thirty towns. During the days that the patache is anchored in port, citizens will have the opportunity to participate in small outings to learn to navigate the boat.
This will be the route Approximate Juanita Larando:
– May: Starting in Getaria, it will be in Pasaia Itsas Festibala between May 26 and 29.
– June: You will visit a dozen towns, among others, Ondarroa, Bilbao, Portugalete in celebration of its 700th anniversary, Plentzia, Elantxobe or Lekeitio.
– July: It will return to Gipuzkoa to call at Mutriku, Deba, Zumaia, Orio, and Hondarribia, among others. At the end of July he will join the Urmuga association and the EuskarAbentura expedition, and will enter Lapurdi.
– August: It will continue its journey between the coast of Gipuzkoa and Lapurdi.
– September: It will return to Getaria and will be part of the special program for Elkano Day on September 6, a holiday this year in the Basque Autonomous Community. After passing through San Sebastián in the Arraun Astea and the Euskal Jaiak, the route will have a final section returning to Ziburu-San Juan de Luz.
The Elkano Itsas Herria cultural journey will be completed with a traveling exhibition, historical talks, colloquiums, bertsolaris, music, dance, storytelling, workshops, documentaries, etc.

– Historical talk by Xabier Alberdi, director of the Basque Maritime Museum.
– Conversations in the traveling exhibition by the Euskal Itsas Museoa.
– Bertsos on maritime themes.
– The dance show “Amoria & Dolore. Elkano Lehen Mundubira” by Kresala Dantza Taldea.
– Concert by the music group Lumi, presenting their album “Bezperen Dirdira” (based on a collection of poems about Elkano and the sea).
– The show by Mitxel Etxekopar from Zuberotarra on Elkano, a recital with theater and music that includes elements of a pastoral.
– The show for adults “Elkano battela, xumea baina gurea”, with music by Nerea Alberdi and Kepa Elgoibar and narrator Koldo Amestoy.
– The children’s show “Elkarrekin Elkano”, with cartoonist Iñaki Martiarena “Mattin” and storyteller Ixabel Agirresarobe.
– Children’s astronomy workshops, with the Aranzadi science society.
– Exhibition of traditional trades related to the sea, by Albaola.
– The documentary “Pedalkadak itsasoan” about the trip that was made by bicycle in search of maritime heritage through Euskal Herria, and a conversation with some of the people who
participated in the tour.
– The documentary “Elkano, haizeari mila galdera” about the sailing trip that took place between Getaria and Seville, and a discussion with some of the people who participated in the
route.
