What is the curse of “Macbeth” suffered by Chris Rock? The comedian may have been the victim of an old Hollywood superstition by saying that word at the 2022 Oscars

After the controversy that will be remembered forever at the Oscars 2022, netizens are already handling a new theory about what happened between Chris Rock and Will Smith.

According to an old Hollywood superstition, you should never speak the name of Shakespeare’s character in a theater, except to perform or rehearse a line from the play, so as not to invite disaster.

“And this is how we do it”: This is how Will Smith’s son defended his father after slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars

What is the curse of “Macbeth” suffered by Chris Rock?

According to critics and biographers of William Shakespeare, “Macbeth” is a cursed play by itself. They claim that the playwright studied witchcraft in depth and that the spells he mentions in his work were real, according to Muy Interesante magazine.

Different witches cursed the play, because they did not like that their spells were revealed in the tragedy written by Shakespeare, so since it began to be presented in public, various accidents occurred. Just as in 1849when a rivalry between the followers of the actors turned into a pitched battle with 22 dead and more than 100 wounded.

In 1937, Laurence Olivier was playing the monarch when a weight came loose and fell onto the stage, crashing just inches from him. In 1953when Charlton Heston was playing the role, his tights literally caught fire, causing serious injuries and there are more recorded cases.

To avoid referring to the character, terms such as “the Scottish king” or “the Scottish lord” should be used and the play as “the Scottish play” and the ninety-fourth edition of the Academy Awards was a clear example.

The new theory claims that the comedian activated the curse

Upon entering the stage, Chris Rock said, “I loved Denzel (Washington) Macbeth!”, referring to his role in last year’s Joel Coen film adaptation. This would have been enough to activate the “curse”.

He then joked about Javier Bardem and his wife Penelope Cruz, before referring to Jada Pinkett Smith saying, “I can’t wait to see the second part of GI Jane,” alluding to her haircut.

“GI Jane”: This is the movie starring Demi Moore in which her hair was shaved off and for which Will Smith was furious with Chris Rock

This bothered some present, mainly Pinkett -who rolled her eyes in disapproval- and then her husband Will Smith, who unexpectedly went on stage and slapped the comedian in the middle of the show, leaving everyone surprised. (AND)
