Maciej Stuhr on “Stories from the village next door”: A wonderful, literary revenge with joy

– I guess it was like this: I went to Podlasie, I came across Miniszewski’s book by accident and some time later I met him … Or maybe I’m wrong: first I met the author, then I went east, and the book was at the end …? Or maybe it all started with a book, I have never been to Podlasie, and Miniszewski does not really exist …? – says Maciej Stuhr and adds: “Anyway, as you can see, it is difficult for me to separate these things from each other. It is rare to meet a soul mate, and I would timidly describe this meeting”.

Maciej Stuhr: Maybe this is the best we can do for now? Laugh at the fascists?

The author of “Stories from the Village Next Door” speaks about the actor in a similar way in an interview with Gazeta.pl. – My friend, who runs agritourism, hosted Maciek Stuhr and Antek Pawlicki, who were also involved in helping [na granicy białoruskiej – red.]. My friend has my books lying around because he also distributes them. Maciek probably picked up the book and saw it. I came and we met, and it turned out that we belong to the same tribe, like-minded people, and hence the project – he explains.

What does Stuhr say about the book itself?

“Tales from the Countryside” is the funniest book I have read recently. A wonderful, literary revenge on a merry occasion for the years of humiliation we’ve been experiencing lately. Maybe this is the best we can do for now? Laugh at the fascists?

On April 30 at 7 p.m. Maciej Stuhr will read two out of 89 stories from Miniszewski’s collection. From 19:10 Stuhr, together with the author of the book, Mirosław Miniszewski and producer Pawlicki, will take part in a conversation about literature, Podlasie and the fate of refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border.

In Tales from the Countryside, the author and Maciej Stuhr, who reads his work, take readers to a world of deep provinces, where he does not sleep well, and the swamps, as centuries ago, can absorb many a wanderer. Mirosław Miniszewski plays with storytelling. It warns that they are intended only for adults. It tells about a world made up of ordinary people, but also pagan supernatural apparitions, quickies quoting Lacan and Lao Tsy, homosexual youths, fascists breeding with their fascist mothers in couches. There are terrible swamps where municipal officials are killed and haunted carousels murdering ministry envoys; Mossad agents and Mrs.

About the author of the audiobook “Opowieści z życia” (“Tales from the Countryside Next”):
