Google dedicates Earth Day doodle to climate change

The design of the today’s google doodle is dedicated to earth day, how could it be otherwise. Unlike last year doodlewhich showed the importance of transmitting environmental education, this April 22, 2022 the search engine has put the focus on one of the most important topics of today: climate change.

To show the impact of climate change, Google has used real time lapse footage that show how planet earth has changed from 1986 to 2020. Images from each location are displayed on the search engine home page during hours.

The first ‘time-lapse’ describes the ice retreat from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania); In another of them, the ice retreat in Greenland; in the third you can see the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and finally, the harz woods (Germany).

What is climate change?

The United Nations Organization describes climate change as long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. These changes can occur naturally, but the UN clarifies that since the 19th century “Human activities have been the main driver of climate change”.

This occurs, above all, by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) which are the ones that produce gases that trap heat.

What is a Google doodle?

The doodle are changes made to the Google symbol commemorating holidays, anniversaries and lives of famous peopledepending on the platform of the tool itself.

The design of these images is in the hands of engineers and illustrators called ‘doodlers’ who are responsible for each of the illustrations that they publish every day on the main page.

How did the idea of doodles come about?

The concept arose in 1998before the constitution of the company, when the founders, Larry and Sergey, they played with the logo to confirm your attendance at the Burning Man Festival, an event held in Nevada (United States). Thus, the official website of the platform says that they drew a “stick figure” behind the second “o” to let it be known that the creators were out of the office. This marked the beginning of the idea to change the logo of the search engine and thus the doodles were created.
