Is it compulsory for everyone to enter the army? You may be punished for avoiding service

According to article 136:

In the event of a direct, external threat to the state, the President of the Republic, at the request of the Prime Minister, orders the general or partial mobilization and use of the Armed Forces to defend the Republic of Poland.

In practice, this means that every citizen between the ages of 18 and 55 can make it compulsory. The limit is higher for people with a non-commissioned officer or officer rank and is 63 years old. There are, however, a few exceptions to this rule.

These persons are exempt from compulsory active military service

Not all Polish citizens in the above age range must report to military service in the event of general mobilization or an outbreak. constitute:

  • Poles living permanently abroad,
  • graduates of schools and training centers of the State Fire Service who, immediately after graduation, entered the service of the Internal Security Agency, the Foreign Intelligence Agency, the Military Counterintelligence Service, the Military Intelligence Service, the Police, the Border Guard, the State Protection Service, the Prison Service or the State Fire Service,
  • university graduates who immediately after graduation started working at the Central Anticorruption Bureau, the Police, the Government Protection Bureau, the State Protection Service or the Border Guard,
  • deputies, senators and councilors,
  • persons holding state managerial positions or positions of public administration bodies,
  • citizens who, due to their qualifications or positions held, are indispensable for ensuring the defense or security of the state.
  • people with health problems that prevent them from serving in the military,
  • pregnant women, within 6 months of childbirth and caring for children up to 8 years of age,
  • women who care for a child aged 8-16 or a bedridden person and have no one to entrust with care for him.

Compulsory service persons may be called upon to perform military exercises

Military exercises are carried out in order to provide mobilization replenishment of the manpower of military units. They can be one-day, short-term (2-30 days) or long-term (31-90 days). A person who receives a summons for such an appointment must obligatorily appear in a designated unit, and the employer is obliged to grant a free allowance for this period.

Failure to attend an exercise or military service could have serious consequences

Failure to appear at the exercises is punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to 30 days. Those who fail to report for compulsory military service may be more seriously affected. In their case, the imprisonment may be up to 2 years.
