At the Castle Opera, awards will be given to artists in eleven classical music categories, showing various historical periods and the style of performance: from solo and chamber recordings to opera and symphonic works, from baroque to contemporary music. The winner of the 18th International Chopin Competition, Bruce Liu, nominated in the categories Best Polish Album Abroad and Most Outstanding Recording of Polish Music, will also compete for Fryderyk.

Fryderyki 2022 – the first gala divided into three thematic threads

This year’s Classical Music Gala will be graced by concerts with the participation of world-famous artists, divided into three themes: Polish music, Baroque opera and romantic music. There will also be musical references to the current world situation: the gala will host a tribute to Ukraine by the Baltic Neopolis Orchestra. Chamber string orchestra from Szczecin will perform, among others, the song “Tribute to Ukraine” based on the national anthem of Ukraine.

The Seym of the Republic of Poland made 2022 the Year of Polish Romanticism. This is a special occasion to present the lesser-known achievements of Polish musical romanticism to the audience gathered at the Castle Opera: the chamber works of Józef Elsner’s student – Józef Władysław Krogulski. The gala will feature parts III and VI of the Piano Octet in D minor, Op. 6 Krogulski performed by excellent soloists-chamber musicians: Jakub Kuszlik, 4th Prize winner of the 18th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Seweryn Zapłatński (flute), Adrian Janda (clarinet), Maria Machowska (1st violin), Kamil Staniczka (2nd violin), Mateusz Dońca (viola), Magdalena Bojanowicz (cello) and Tomasz Januchta (double bass). The Polish theme of the gala will also include works by Grażyna Bacewicz and Mieczysław Karłowicz. The outstanding violinist Roksana Kwaśnikowska and Łukasz Chrzęszczyk – laureate of international piano competitions – will perform the finale of Bacewiczówna’s 4th Violin Sonata, and multiple Fryderyk laureates in jazz categories – the Atom String Quartet – Karłowicz’s song “Under the sycamore” arranged by Michał Zaborski.

The presence of baroque music performed on historical instruments is becoming a tradition of the Fryderyk Festival of Classical Music. This year, the celebration will be honored by the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Jarosław Thiel, who will accompany the Italian soprano Giulia Semenzato in arias composed by Antonio Vivaldi and Georg Friedrich Handel. The outstanding Polish bass, Adam Palka, soloist of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, performing on the stages of the Wiener Staatsoper, Opera National de Paris and Teatro Real in Madrid will also appear on stage twice. The artist will perform the aria “Infelice … e tuo credevi …” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Ernani” and the so-called an aria with a whistle “Son lo spirito que nega” from Arriga Boita’s opera “Mefistofeles”. The soloist will be accompanied by the Castle Opera Orchestra conducted by Jerzy Wołosiuk.

In March, the Phonographic Academy announced nominations for the Fryderyk 2022 award in seventeen categories of popular music and three jazz categories. The record holder is Daria Zawiaow, who won three individual nominations and several shared with other musicians – in total, the singer and composer has ten chances for the statuette. The winners will be announced here on April 29.
