Why do they call the Oscars that way? The legend of the Academy librarian who found a similarity between the statuette and hers “Uncle Oscar”

The most important award in the world film industry has a long story to tell. The most important and popular, perhaps, is why the Academy Awards are called Oscars.

In tribute to an artist or pioneer of the arts? To know the history of the name, you have to go back to the 1930s, shortly after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences created in 1929 the award that honors the achievements of the industry.

The eternal Oscar nominees, will they take the golden statuette at the 2022 gala?

This is the reason for the name of the Oscars

It must first be known that the real name is Academy Award of Merit. Since 1939, this award adopted the name that remained in everyone’s memory and that is how it is known today.

There are several versions, but the best known and most popular is that when Margaret Herrick, then a librarian at the Academy, saw the golden statuette for the first time and said: “It looks like my Uncle Oscar”.

Already in 1934 the laurel was known as Oscar, so much so that columnists referred to the trophy that way in articles, so that in 1939 the Academy formally adopted it, according to CNN.

Years later, the employee became the executive director of the Academy until 1971. Herrick got his own statuette and to pay tribute to his career within the arts organization, the library bears his name.

For the first time in 35 years, three women will present the awards

After three years without a presenter, Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall will be in charge of presenting the Academy Awards ceremony in its 94th edition, on March 27, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

This would be the first time in history that three women present the gala. However, it is not the first time that more than one person has enlisted for the job.

Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway are the most recent case, in 2011. Both received various criticisms for their “low” performance as presenters.

Since the 59th edition in 1987, with Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan, the event has not had three hosts.
